"People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk or nuts run the risk of serious or fatal allergic reactions if they consume this product," the FDA noted after the announcement.
Trader Joe's Genova has milk and walnuts like other pestos. However, a packing blunder appeared to have put pesto into the wrong containers.
"These tubs do not contain an allergen declaration of milk or walnuts," the FDA warned, adding more specifics about the recalled batch.
"The affected product has UPC 0015 7353 on the side labeling and Use By date of 05/27/2023 with a time date between 06:28 – 07:07 printed on the bottom of the tub."
The recalled product was shipped to Trader Joe's shops in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. It arrived here between 4/28 and 4/30/2023.
Since the recall is due to mislabeling, you don't need to throw out your bottle of Trader Joe's Genova Pesto unless you're allergic to milk or walnuts.
Trader Joe's recommends discarding the product or returning it for a refund if you have a milk or walnut allergy. The company's Product Feedback website and customer service hotline are (626) 599-3817.
Thankfully, no adverse reactions have been documented, and the product has been removed from retail.
